Symptoms:

Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station stops transmitting.  Power light will be solid, wireless light will be out, and LAN light will be solid or flickering.  After the base station has stopped transmitting it will stop responding to its wired IP; static or dynamic.  The immediate solution is to just unplug the base station power and plug it back in, effectively rebooting the base station.  However, if you have experienced this problem, chances are that it is happening constantly, dropping within every 20 minutes to every few days.   Simply unplugging the stupid thing every half hour is not a solution.

Bottom Line:

Apple has admittedly known about and hushed this issue since before 2003.

Here is a small portion of our Apple correspondence...

Greetings Thane,

I received a reply from the engineer.

Downgrading is only a temporary workaround while the engineers are investigating this restarting symptom. I apologize that I cannot give you more information than that.  What I can tell you is that Engineering is working on addressing this matter as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

Thank you Ethan, I have switched over to 5.5.1 from 5.4 I was trying, as the next morning our office was flooded with phone calls because none of our wpa users were able to connect.   I have also downgraded most of the newer 5.7 models.  As of now I have about 20 AirPort Extremes now running 5.5.1 from my monitoring it seems that none of them have dropped completely, occasionally one will ping out which is odd, because I have the on right next to it responding at <30ms and have no users connected to each of them, but they eventually respond and I can live with that.  I have not received any complaints from my users in almost a week and that is a new record.

I noticed that the 5.5.1 was released in 2004 and does not currently support wpa2.

So why has Apple released a firmware version that it knows to be unstable, and what exactly is the problem with the newer firmware versions?

Greetings Thane,

I have received a response from the escalation!

The engineer suggest that you downgrade to firmware 5.5.1 on these base stations. This firmware is available here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremefirmware551formacosx.html.

Note: Much more to be added to this article time permitting. We have found the solution and cause of many of the AirPort problems.
